What I Want to Read: March 2013

Hello there wordshippers,

I love March! I am so glad it is finally here. Days are getting longer again (perfect for a late riser like me) and soon spring will be here (at least according to the calendar). I am hoping for as much sunshine as Raincouver can tolerate and a couple great reads. This month I will be finishing A Clash of Kings by George R. R. Martin and continuing with the Chronicles of Narnia. I am also going to read two books that were sent to me as part of the goodreads first reads giveaways. I am excited to delve into a wide range of genres this month, some of them completely new to me.

In terms of my book buying ban, I am happy to announce that I have not broken it yet. In January I decided not to spend money on books this year, and so far I have been successful. However, this has not stopped me from getting my hands on new books, which was the actual idea behind the ban (there are too many unread darlings on my shelves waiting to be read). I also got a library card in February and have spent a fair amount of time. I am thinking of writing a blog post on how to get your hands on free/cheap books. Are you interested in reading about this? Let me know!

So without further ado, here is what I am going to be reading in March:

The Almond Tree by Michelle Cohen Corasanti

"Gifted with a mind that continues to impress the elders in his village, Ichmad Hamid struggles with the knowledge that he can do nothing to save his friends and family. Living on occupied land, his entire village operates in constant fear of losing their homes, jobs, and belongings.  On Ichmad’s twelfth birthday, that fear becomes reality. With his father imprisoned, his family’s home and possessions confiscated, and his siblings quickly succumbing to hatred in the face of conflict, Ichmad begins an inspiring journey using his intellect to save his poor and dying family. In doing so he reclaims a love for others that was lost through a childhood rife with violence, and discovers a new hope for the future."

I am super excited for this. I won this in a goodreads giveaway and I will definitely be writing a review of it! :)

Prince Caspian in The Chronicles of Narnia by C. S. Lewis

"A prince fights for his crown. Narnia... where animals talk... where trees walk... here a battle is about to begin. A prince denied his rightful throne gathers an army in a desperate attempt to rid his land of a false king. But in the end, it is a battle of honor between two men alone that will decide the fate of an entire world."

This is the fourth story in the Chronicles of Narnia. So far I have enjoyed reading these quite a bit (although I did not really like The Horse and His Boy). I am excited to indulge in another of Lewis' great stories. They really are for young and old. If you haven't read these, or if you have only seen the movies, give them a try!

Deck Z: The Titanic: Unsinkable. Undead. by Chris Pauls and Matt Solomon

"The year is 1912. Theodor Weiss, a German scientist, has discovered a strange new plague that ravages its victims, transforming them into soulless, flesh-hungry monsters. Yet, his lab studies show that the strain also holds great promise: It could be the key for a cure to all types of the plague. When Weiss uncovers a sinister military plot to use the disease as a weapon, he steals the world’s only sample vial and makes for America, where he will be safely out of the reach of German operatives. And what better way to travel in anonymity than on the world’s largest ocean liner, making its maiden voyage that very week? Titanic. "

This is also a book that I won in a goodreads giveaway! I am super excited to start reading my copy that is signed by both authors (how exciting is that?). Zombies are completely new territory for me. You can expect a review of this one!

A Clash of Kings by George R. R. Martin

Synopsis can be found here.

Of course I am also going to be finishing A Clash of Kings. I was in a bit of a slump with this one. I like it so far, but I always have problems getting into the Song of Ice and Fire books at the beginning. I got a lot of reading done yesterday, though, and I also just talked to a friend, who is currently reading A Dance with Dragons (book 5). He is way ahead of me but he got me really excited to finish book number 2 and to keep reading the series.
